ht-lights Dimmable led Candelabra Bulb appears to have finally achieved that goal
I have a small nightstand lamp that uses a single candelabra bulb, and is touch sensitive. That is, touch it once to turn on dim, again for medium, again for bright, and again for off. I’ve tried three or four “dimmable” candelabra bulbs and none of them worked well with the touch dimmer. They flickered, buzzed, or didn’t really dim at all. One just constantly, but slowly, cycled through the brightness levels. Frustration!
The HT-lights LED Candelabra Bulb promises three things: 1) fully dimmable, 2) “warm glow” while dim, and 3) high brightness (60W equivalent) when fully on. I think it succeeds on all three promises.
1) Fully dimmable. When I installed the bulb in my touch lamp, it came on dim. I mean really dim. I ran though the cycles, and gosh if it didn’t act just like an incandescent bulb. There is no buzz, no flicker, nothing bad at all. It just dims, and to a really low level.
2) “Warm glow”. I don’t know that I care about this much, but most LEDs do take on a bit of a greenish tint when they are fully dimmed. It doesn’t really bother me, but I was interested in seeing this “warm glow” tech in action. Sure enough, when fully dim the light produced is downright orangish. Turn it up to bright and it’s still a cheery soft white light without even a hint of blue. The packaging says it varies from 3000K, and that seems true. I’d like to know how they achieve that warm glow. I suspect they are using warm and cool LEDs and varying their output ratios with the overall illumination level. However they do it, it’s effective, and eliminates one complaint people still have about LEDs.
3) High brightness. Fully on, it’s bright, no doubt about that. I’m not positive that it’s equal to a 60W incandescent bulb, but it is a very bright candelabra LED bulb, and that’s hard to find.
So this bulb hit it out of the park on three specific promises, but it did fail me on one point, it’s too tall for my lamp! In fairness, it is a very small lamp, but the bulb will not fit under the lamp’s harp. Sadness enveloped me, so I arranged all my failed LED candelabra bulbs around me and contemplated my fate… No I didn’t, I grabbed my Dremel. This bulb has an acrylic enclosure whose only purpose is to give the bulb that candelabra fake flame shape. I don’t care about the shape since it will be hidden under a lampshade, and the enclosure makes the bulb fully an inch taller than it needs to be. The Dremel cutoff disk made short work of the acrylic enclosure (voids warranty, wear eye protection, be safe, etc. etc.) and now the bulb fits comfortably in my lamp. Please see photos.
Considering how much frustration I’ve experienced with LED candelabra bulbs in this lamp, I have no problem giving this HT-lights bulb 3-stars. Even though I had to perform surgery on the bulb to make it fit my lamp, that’s hardly the bulb’s fault, and I deduct nothing for it. I’m very happy with this LED bulb.
